As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This African proverb perfectly captures the essence of communal effort and collective responsibility, reflecting the collaborative spirit of Parent-Teacher Association in the recent meeting at Champions International Schools.
The meeting convened on Saturday with parents of students from Senior Secondary School (SSS) 1 & 2, Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 & 2, and Primary School aimed to enhance academic performance and address behavioral challenges within the school. Discussions centered on strategic plans to foster academic advancement and mitigate disciplinary issues.
The meeting, which lasted for about 3hours, was opened by a parent, Mr. Adewumi Olaniyi, who said the prayer. Following was the worship and praise songs, sung by Champions Voice Choir made up of talented staffs.
At the close of some dedicated prayers to the children, led by the Director of Studies, Mr. Fola Adekeye, his speech on EFFECTIVE PARENTING took place.
Mr. Fola started, “At Champions, we teach the children to set clear goals and to believe in themselves. We teach them to be confident and to see themselves as global leaders.” He then appealed to parents never to talk down a child as this hinders their confidence to doing great in their studies.
Also, he adjured parents to be a big fan of their children. “To become a big fan of your children, you have to really know them and love them. Learn to cheer them up when they fail and praise them when they perform well.”
Furthermore, he enjoined parents to be excellent coaches of their children as well as their refrees. As coaches, he said that parents would be ready to instil good trainings and be interested in the progress of their children while as refrees, they would make clear rules for them to live by in this wayward generation. He asked them to be interested in their children’s performance in school and to deny them the pleasure from beautiful distractions such as phones and television, so they can prioritize their studies.
The Director of Studies finally informed the parents about the unscrupulous generation of children in today’s society. He referred to them as intractable children. “We are in the generation of children that is difficult to guide and manage. The job of a parent is to search out and unlock the hidden potential of these children.” He said.
He however pleaded with parents to work together with the school by playing their roles to overcoming this generation full of unruly children.
Parents’ contributions were taken and the clossing prayer was said by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Osawe (parent).
