Science is connected with the society. People are aware of scientific knowledge and the need for this knowledge to be sustained so as to promote great development and peaceful cohabitation among individuals.
While celebrating World Science Day on Friday at Champions International Schools, various events took place at the Primary, Junior and Senior sections of the school.
Pupils in the Primary School were exposed to the reasons and importance for celebrating World Science Day. Many of their teachers spoke to them about many ideas that have been invented and urged them to know more about the science world to create more for a better living. After this exposition, the students went for an eye-opening presentation on Solar system and all it encompasses before moving into the lab to carry out some experiments on Tiltrations. It was such an exposing day for the pupils to the incredible world of science
At the African Hall in the Junior School, the event that took place centered around Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The demonstration of some facts about science and how it came into being which was presented by the students marked the opening of the event. They established the significant role of science in the society and the need for new scientific innovations to better the lives of the people was greatly emphasized..
Talking about Cyber Security, Mr. Femi Adekeye, the AI & Data teacher and organizer of students’ presentations, gave a brief lecture on it. “Cyber Security is the use of technologies to protect devices and data from cyber attacks,” he stated. He further explained that Cyber Security helps to block unauthorized access to systems and technologies that may be prone to hacking. Protecting one’s account with strong password; setting up multi-factor verification; updating one’s devices; using anti-virus applications among others were stated as useful tips on how to protect one’s account or device.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) was another area of argument when he compared and contrasted how it has greatly impacted the workforce. “Automation is taking over most jobs in the society for more efficiency and cost reductions even though it has contributed adversely to displacement of jobs.” While talking about its importance, he informed that Science Day aims to ensure that societies are reminded of the impact science has on our daily lives. He urged students and parents to get involved more with science and its advancements, to have a deeper understanding on how it works and relates with our environments.
Also, in the Senior School, the students celebrated the day with quizzes and debate. All departments converged in the Excellence Hall where students were asked questions on subjects like Mathematics, ICT, and Biology. After the quiz, some other students debated the topic: “Should Artificial Intelligence (AI) replace Human Intelligence (HI)?” The debaters strongly displayed their oral skills and intelligence exploring the advantages and aesthetics of Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence.
At the end, one of the moderators orientate the students on how the two can co-exist to make the world a better place and how humans should engage machines more. “Humans and machines can work together for optimal efficiency,” Mrs Ojo said.
